CGF E Alexander Stent Fund grant to fund additional Kenneth Warren Fellowship

The IHPBA Foundation is extremely grateful to the CGF E Alexander Stent Fund, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee, for providing a generous grant which has been designated to fund a second Kenneth Warren Fellowship in 2017/2018.   Dr Kenneth W Warren’s sons, Tom and George Warren, set up the Foundation with the goal of supporting the salary of two Warren Fellows each year, and we are therefore delighted that this grant has enabled the IHPBA Foundation to award a second Kenneth Warren Fellowship this year.

Dr Fabio Bagante was awarded the 2017/2018 Kenneth Warren Fellowship in June this year and we are now very pleased to announce that the second IHPBA Kenneth Warren Fellowship for 2017/2018 has been awarded to Dr Nouredin Messaoudi of Antwerp, Belgium. Dr Messaoudi trained under Professor Dirk Ysebaert at the Antwerp University Hospital.

The general goal of Dr Messaoudi’s research project is to define new strategies to overcome colorectal cancer (CRC) resistance to immunotherapy by elucidating key immunosuppressive pathways that limit the immune recognition of colorectal cancer liver metastases. This project focuses on defining whether CRC liver metastases express the cell surface enzyme CD73, which leads to extracellular accumulation of highly immunosuppressive adenosine in the tumor microenvironment. As multiple new immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as anti-CD73 therapeutic antibodies, are being developed, these results are likely to contribute to rational design of clinical trials in selected CRC patients, rather than pursuing the conventional testing of new compounds in unselected populations.

Dr Messaoudi will conduct his research under the mentorship of Dr Simon Turcotte, at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal Research Center (CRCHUM) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

IHPBA would like to congratulate Dr Messaoudi on this achievement and wish him all the best with his research in Montreal.
